1974-06-16, WTF is that kazoo sound on Truckin!? |
I was lucky to enough to dl a lot of sbds before they got pulled, including this one:
http://www.archive.org/details/gd74-06-16.sbd.fink.17701.sbeok.shnffor those who don't have a copy, i'll upload the truckin' for you to hear the strange kazoo-like sounds in the intro. anybody know what the heck that is? never heard anything like it. it's most prominent in the beginning, but it comes again throughout the song. is this an instrument!? what is it?

Doesn't sound intentional to me- it's in rhythm but otherwise tuneless.

Holy post-truckin' jam! I forgot how good this baby was. The china>rider is among the best of the year as well, and how about that eyes?
The quality of this sbd I have is very good. Does anybody happen to have the RT copy in addition to an older sbd? How much better can the RT be? IMO when they pick official releases, they should focus more on shows they can really improve the sound quality on. There's too many releases that I already have amazing copies of.

Strange buzzing, like a bad speaker cone from the WOS.

That is Keith's keyboard - at 1:26 you can clearly hear him change over the effect, or "voicing" of the instrument... not sure if it's a B3 or Hammond or whatever. Nice clean recording BTW.
edit: or someone throws a switch or repairs something from his keyboard at 1:26.

Re: 1974-06-16, WTF is that kazoo sound on Truckin!? |
thank you uj. that was my first thought actually, but i'm not familiar with keith ever doing this. i wonder if anyone could shed some light on how this was done technically, and what other times he did this. wasn't he playing his fender rhodes at this point? i don't understand how this was achieved. it sounds awful by the way. doesn't sound anything like a b3. i didn't think it could be a speaker problem, because you can tell how it's incorporated into the music.
edit: wait a minute uj. the kazoo sounds are from the first 1:26, then it switches over briefly, and then at 1:36 back to the kazoo sounds. now i'm really confused.

Re: Paging Light Into Ashes |
You rang?
It's definitely a problem with Keith's Fender Rhodes. I don't think it's an intentional effect. But you can tell it's in his channel, and that's the sound that comes out when he's pressing the keys. (Which is why it's in rhythm with the tune.) I couldn't say whether it's a speaker or a cable or what.
But some ace Dead tech seems to have been at work while Keith played; at :45 (on the RT copy) it switches back to the 'normal' Fender sound, at 1:02 returns to the buzz, comes back to normal at 1:20, buzzes again at 1:32, and is back to normal for good by 1:49. The electronic mice were defeated again!
Keith also makes weird UFO noises on the PITB in that show, on purpose...

Re: Paging Light Into Ashes |
I don't want to start any wacky debate here on what Keith played but all I remember was defiately a B-3, A 9ft baby grand and then after that was ditched on to the electric Yamaha piano. Now I'm sure Cliff or some one could come up w/ a pix of the Fender Rhodes which is easily indentified.
To add to this I just found an old pix of the free 75' gig in the park w/ clearly a F/R on stage but this is during set break and could've easily belonged to Starship as well.

Re: Paging Light Into Ashes |
thanks very much for answering your pager and giving your input lia.
leftwinger, i know he didn't primarily use the rhodes, but after the hiatus i'm pretty sure he used nothing but his rhodes. i also know that with the WOS, keith's piano had two pickups, with half the signal going to the pa, and half going to the monitor system. this produced a much better sound than if they just played mics by the piano. he also used a wah-wah at times, but i don't think the sound was from that. i also remember reading at some point that the piano pickups were charged with an extremely high voltage, which would often crackle in humid conditions, which makes perfect sense. iowa is known to have VERY humid summers, which is when this show was played.

Does any other band raise these kind of questions?
Does any other band have fans that know the answer?

Yes, I hear it come back again as you mention, then go away pretty quickly... then thru the majority of the song everything's cool. I would ascribe this to a tech issue as somebody mentioned with WOS equipment, not done deliberately.

I'm particular to the PITB, it's downright cosmic and one of the top 3 - imo - of the year. I think there IS someone with a kazoo playin along at the start...WT?

Re: do you mean gazoo???? |
I think it's Ned Lagin and his box of tricks. It's quite clear on the Road Trips release.
